About BG-PX

BG-PX is a site and system dedicated to exploring the intersection of board game player experience and the various fields of user-centered design. Fields like graphic design, user experience design, human factors, and so on.

The primary mission of the blog is to slowly cover as many aspects of the UX field as possible and consider how they might apply to the world of board game design. The vision is that this will inspire and challenge game designers to make player-centric experiences and improve our collective craft.

Who is behind BG-PX?

My name is Patrick McNeil, though many know me as McMeeple. I have been heavily committed to creating board games for about 10 years now. But I have been a gamer my whole life; from RPGs, and Axis and Allies of the ’80s to the Ark Nova, and Gloomhaven of the 2020s. Professionally I work in the UX field (for about 25 years) where I work with major corporations to create software interfaces that are easy and satisfying to use. The worlds of UX and board game design have a lot of interesting overlaps, which I look forward to exploring here on BG-PX.com.

Critiquing design work is something that I have done a lot of over the years. As a Graphic Deisgn professor, a web design blogger, an author of six books on web design, author of UX Methods, through hundreds of published articles in numerous profesional publications, and as a consultant working to champion user-centered design practices. Breaking down design work is what I do, and I am super excited to apply this to a field I truly love…board games.

I love to design games, especially with my kids, and I publish almost everything we finish on The Game Crafter. You can find us at McMeeple.com. And I keep a log of most of the games I play on Instagram.
